The D-major Serenade, the “Posthorn” Serenade (K. 320), was written in Salzburg and apparently served, like K. 204, as a Finalmusik for the end-of-year festivities at Salzburg University, which always took place in early August.  The autograph score, located in the Staatsbibliothek Preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin, is dated 3 August 1779 in Mozart’s hand.  A  Viennese set of handwritten parts with Mozart’s corrections, preserved today in the library of the Styrian State Conservatory in Graz, hands town the symphony version of the nine-movement serenade in only three movements: Adagio maestoso-Allegro con spirito, Andantino, and Finale: Presto.
