J. S. Bach’s busy performing schedule in Leipzig in the 1730’s demanded new compositions weekly.  Therefore, he transcribed some of his violin, oboe, and oboe d’amore concerti into harpsichord concerti.

Though the manuscript of the harpsichord arrangements survived, the original sources from Bach’s Cöthen period were not preserved.  Much research has been done to restore these concerti (notably BWV 1052–1058) from the harpsichord versions.  Opinions differ as to what instrument Bach had originally desired for the concerti.  In the case of BWV 1055, several clues from the harpsichord version suggest oboe d’amore.
